Dear all,
The organizing committee of the 11th ICAZ Conference, Paris, 23-28
August 2010, received 270 applications for financial support from
delegates. This is a lot, due to the fact that the registration fees are
rather expensive considering the general economic situation. We did our
best to help as many delegates as possible and to do so as fairly as
possible:
- The conference organizing committee worked hard during the three last
years to collect grants for financial support, and we obtained
significant financial contributions from four French Institutions
(Muséum (MNHN), Région Ile-de-France, CNRS, Ministry of Foreign
Affairs), from two European networks (Bioarch GDRE and LeCHE), from ICAZ
itself, and from the national organization for dairying (OCHA - CNIEL),
a semi-private sponsor;
- We convened an international committee to evaluate the applications in
a transparent fashion. That committee made decisions according to the
criteria that are clearly listed in the 3rd circular:
http://www2.mnhn.fr/archeozoo-archeobota/?-FINANCIAL-SUPPORT-FOR-PARTICIPANTS
This committee worked very hard during the last months, so as to be able
to notify the applicants of the results as early as possible (airline
tickets were still relatively low-priced at that time, but they are
rapidly becoming more expensive). The awards process is now nearly
complete. All the applicants who were awarded funds have received
notification with a budget and information about the way to proceed. In
case of withdrawals by funded delegates (there have already been some),
we have created a waiting list of nearly 40 additional delegates.
Here is a short summary of the results. We managed to partially fund 165
delegates, 49% of them being (under)graduate and PhD students and
Post-Docs. Latin America, Eastern & Central Europe, and East Asia are
represented by approximately the same number of sponsored delegates
each, i.e., between 17% and 26%. Funded delegates are representative of
40 different countries. For each of the main geographic zones, the
following table summarizes the percent of applications, the percent of
the total funded delegates and the percent of total funds awarded. All
awards are calculated in Euros:

Note that Oceania, Africa, and the Near East are poorly represented
because of the very few applicants from those regions.
A more detailed assessment is being sent to the ICAZ IC.
The outcome of the awards process meets the objectives originally set
forth:
- a large number of funded delegates;
- special help for young scientists;
- special focus on Central and Eastern Europe;
- ongoing help for Latin American colleagues, following the Mexico
conference;
- ensuring that colleagues from new countries are represented,
especially those from the Far East.
We hope that helping to ensure world-wide representation will help all
of us to have a great conference in Paris this coming August.
Last but not least: all the delegates have to register on the 3rd
circular website (enve if you have already pre-registered on the 2nd
circular) BEFORE 30 APRIL (the registrations fees will greatly increase
after that date).
Please, Don't wait the last hours to do it (I am not sure that our
computer system will support too much connections!);
For the Organizing Committee,
For the Financial Support Committee,
Sincerely,
Jean-Denis Vigne
