medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
if i may prevail upon the list for another inquiry (perhaps more simple and
straightforward than my last):
i am interested in Prince Henry of France (a.k.a., "Henri de France," "Hank
the Frank," etc.), third son of Louis VI, brother of Louis VII.
he began his career as a secular cleric, most likely as part of a rather
elaborate and deliberate royal strategy to deal with the strong (and
threatening, even occasionally violent) movement for "reform" which shook the
Capetian ecclesiastical domain in the first half of the 12th c.
but, for a complex of interrelated reasons, he was converted to the monastic
life by Bernie and entered Clairvaux in early 1147.
By the time of his conversion –as a mature but still young man of 24 or
25– he had accumulated nearly a dozen ecclesiastical benefices, all in the
King’s gift, including those of Treasurer (essentially abbot) of the
collegial church of St. Martin of Tours and Archdeacon in the cathedral
chapters of Orléans and Paris.
Perhaps most significantly, he was also the Abbot of almost all of the Royal
collegial foundations (abbas regalium abbatiarum, as he styled himself in one
his own charters) namely:
St. Denis-de-la-Châtre,
St. Spire of Corbeil,
St. Mellon of Pontoise,
St. Corneille of Compiègne
and the Saint Marys of Poissy, Mantes, Melun and Étampes
that's 11 benefices.
is that a record number (at least for this period)?
does anyone know of a person who accumulated more?
