There has been some controversy about the Digital Economy bill and the
implications for Wi-Fi. See the 'Wi-Fi' entry on the Local Authority
Library Technology Website (LGLibTech)
http://lglibtech.wikispaces.com/Wi-Fi
<http://lglibtech.wikispaces.com/Wi-Fi> . It quotes (and links to) a
couple of interesting comments
from BoingBoing blog (Cory Doctorow)
'Lilian Edwards, professor of internet law at Sheffield University, told
ZDNet UK on Thursday that the scenario described by the Department for
Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) in an explanatory document would
effectively "outlaw open Wi-Fi for small businesses", and would leave
libraries and universities in an uncertain position'.
From Public Policy Connections
'U.K. Libraries and Universities Protest against Government Wi-Fi Plans
Libraries and universities in the United Kingdom are protesting a bill
that would require organizations to police users of their wireless
networks, reports the BBC. The U.K.'s Digital Economy Bill includes
plans to make providers responsible for what is done over free Wi-Fi.
The plans imply that libraries, universities and cafes offering free
wireless will be responsible if people use it to pirate movies and
music'.
It would be interesting to hear views from public libraries that have
implemented Wi-Fi. Are they worried about the implications?
NOTE: Please feel free to edit the LGLibTech Wi-Fi page to add or
correct information (you just need to sign in to the wiki-anyone can do
this-it's free)

Subject: Wi-Fi update from Insight Media Internet Limited
Dear List
Apologies for cross-posting.
To provide a practical update on Wi-Fi technology for public libraries,
Insight Media will be holding a series of seminars across the UK during
April, aimed specifically at managers responsible for providing internet
technology for public facilities and local government.
The events, which are free to attend, will take place in Manchester
(15th April), Edinburgh (21st April) and London (28th April) and will
look at the key considerations for implementing wireless for public
access. Click for details <http://www.insight-media.co.uk/wifi2010> .
The Digital Economy Bill has been the subject of much discussion with
regards to wireless internet connectivity and this is obviously relevant
to public libraries. Although the requirements of the Bill have been
changing daily we need to be aware of the implications and have
therefore included this in our agenda.
As a leading supplier of internet solutions for public access, Insight
Media has a wealth of experience in this market and is looking forward
to meeting with customers and potential users to better understanding
the long term requirements for wireless access in Libraries and other
areas of local government. Click here to register
