Thanks, Henry, for assisting -- I don't see the point in ridiculing "the Germans" either. Just to name another contemporary American film scholar who has written elegantly on the same question: Carl Plantinga in his recent book "Moving Viewers" (2009), where he talks about Titanic and the sad pleasure connected to the male protagonist's death.
