Bob,
Judged is just the wrong word - it takes it out of the subjective and
personal, the real erratic of response, and places it in a collective
and formal context of hierarchy. Of course we respond to poems across
a whole spectrum, from highly negative to highly positive, and yes,
life is comparative, but we don't (or I don't anyway) pronounce
sentence. I am quite well aware that there are people who 'judge' in
this way, and certain institutions can only function properly because
of that approach, but it is nearly always artificial and arbitrary.
My response to the word 'judged' was emotional.
