Hi Paul,
I think a current and general challenge for developers is to become more adept at tackling usability.
If you want to involve non-developers, why not invite repository users, usability/UX specialists to join the developers and have an impromptu inspection, and a bash on enhancing the usability of repositories? The bash could also involve evaluation of quick/low-fi mockups or even implementation of any useful features/enhancements; both developers/non-developers alike can experience aspects of user-centred development.
And there is likely to be a variety of repository UI/systems already available, and they are likely to have usability issues!
Regards,
Boon

This is your opportunity to make a case for focussing a pool of developer talent and domain expertise on the technical issue you would like to see addressed.
