Thanks for a great list of references.
I have a couple of related questions.
How often are abstracts (particularly those presented at conferences but
otherwise unpublished) included in systematic reviews?
And does the Cochrane Collaboration have any guidance on this practice?
Just yesterday we discussed a paper where two of the included studies came
only from such abstracts, and it worried us.
Best wishes
Trish

G'day!
There is a systematic review on this subject, which is quite important:
http://www.mrw.interscience.wiley.com/cochrane/clsysrev/articles/MR000005/frame.html
Essentially this raises the question: is the exclusion of abstract-only
reported trials a factor in biasing systematic reviews towards more
positive findings?
Best wishes
Hilda

Was it this one?
n18-68% of abstracts are inaccurate, contain inconsistencies or contain
material not in main text
(Pitkin, R.M., et.al., Accuracy of data in abstracts of published research
articles. JAMA 276, 637-9, 1999.)

And:-
Pitkin RM et al. JAMA 1999; 281: 1110-1
There’s also the issue of incomplete conference reports:-
Toma M et al. JAMA 2005; 295: 1281-7.
And that RCTs when published don’t report all outcomes:-

Emne: Qu: reference re the "accuracy" (or rather lack of) of journal

Dear EBM experts
I remember somewhere a paper that assessed the quality of abstracts and how
"accurate" they are at summarising what a research paper is about. I seem
to remember an extraordinarily low percentage. Does anyone have a reference
for this?
thanks
Annabel
