medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I just wrote, apropos Domitianus of Carinthia, venerated at Millstatt in today's Land Kärnten:
> ...the discovery, during a restoration of the church's interior in
> 1988/89, of part of the upper right corner of a Carolingian-period
> funerary inscription that apparently refers to paganism (the pretty
> clearly preserved letters GANITA are almost cetainly from a case-form
> of _paganitas_) and whose subject's name, only partly preserved, has
> been reasonably though not conclusively reconstructed as Domicianus,
> has thrown a new light on things.
Hans-Dieter Kahl, _Der Millstätter Domitian_ (Stuttgart: Jan Thorbecke Verlag, 1999), gives on p. 106 a photograph of the fragment and on p. 107 a reconstruction by Franz Glaser of the entire inscription.
> The monastery was given to the Knights of St. Heorge in 1469...
St. George, obviously.

The church has a monumental portal from the time of abbot Heinrich I (1166-1177). Some views are here:
