For attention to detail and sheer comprehensiveness, I like Gromova
1950/1960 (volume 1 and 2 respectively). 'Opredelitelj mlekopitajušc(ih
SSSR po kostjam skeleta'.
The species names are given in Latin script so it's useful even if you
can't read cyrillic.
Not the easiest to get hold of, admittedly, but there are high-quality
scans doing the rounds.
