Hi Jen,
CCTV only had a peripheral role (at best) in the identification of the 7/7
bombers. More traditional policing routes were more successful - the
personal belongings of Mohammed Siddique Khan found at numerous bomb sites,
injuries to Hasib Hussein's (the 'bus bomber) body being consistent to those
suffered by suicide bombers in Sri Lanka and Israel-Palestine, phone call
from Hasib Hussein's parents to the police hotline etc. (I've written some
stuff on it although, amongst others, there's a House of Commons report from
2006 focusing on the investigation that is probably easier to get hold of).
The famous footage of the bombers entering Luton station therefore wasn't as
key as many subsequent accounts have suggested. You're right about the volume
of data: the police initially requested CCTV footage from a number of sources
for a 12 hr period surrounding the bombings. For one (of 32) London
municipality, Hackney, this amounted to over 32 000 hours of footage. I have
a pile of stuff on this so let me know if there's anything I can help with &
I'll be happy to send through.
Best,
Pete

Subject: Evidence review of 7/7 bombings
I'm looking for any figures that quantify how long it took for review of CCTV
footage from the 7/7 London bombings in 2005 - I've heard anecdotal evidence
that it took the police months to sort through the footage, but I am unable
thus far to locate an actual citation where this topic is discussed. Does
anyone on the list happen to know of a reliable source for this information?
Thanks --
