Radcliffe Trust Composition Bursary
The Radcliffe Trust together with the University of Nottingham Department of Music has established a Composition Bursary which will commence, for the first time, in September 2010 and will run for three years. The recipient will be enrolled on the AMusD postgraduate composition programme, which normally involves three years of full-time study (or six years part-time). The value of the Bursary will be £6,000 p.a. (this is intended to cover the University’s yearly fees (currently £3,460) as well as contribute towards subsistence).
The recipient of the Bursary will study, on a one-to-one basis, with the Department’s composer, Nicholas Sackman. Dr Sackman is one of the country’s leading composers (recent commissions have come from the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, Sinfonia Viva, Sarah Nicolls, and Drumstruck). His new Violin Sonata will be premiered in March 2010 and his Concertino for Violin and Orchestra is currently being commercially recorded. His setting of the medieval poem, Maiden in the Moor, was recently included in the NMC Songbook.
The University of Nottingham Department of Music is recognised as a leading centre for research and teaching in music. Together with the University’s Lakeside Arts Centre, it is able to offer the opportunity (in the second year of study) to have one new composition workshopped with one of the resident ensembles – currently the Allegri Quartet and the Orlando Consort – with a public-concert performance of a new composition during the third year of study.
APPLICATION
In the first instance please send a CV (including a short list of recent composition performances) and a written statement (no more than one side of A4) containing the following information:
1. a statement as to why this Bursary would fit with your creative aspirations and an indication of what you would hope to achieve during the three years.
2. a clear suggestion of ways in which you would interact with the Department, especially if not living in Nottingham.
3. an indication of how you would cover the full cost of living expenses while you study.
At this stage no scores or musical materials should be sent.
The application should be sent by email to [log in to unmask], or by post to Liz Hickling (PG Administrator), Department of Music, University of Nottingham, University Park, Nottingham, NG7 2RD.
The deadline for applications is 22 March 2010. Shortlisted candidates will be notified by 5 April and asked to submit two examples of their recent compositions (hard-copy scores and, if available, recordings) by 19 April. It is anticipated that interviews will take place around 19 May.
