HI Astrid,
Thanks. Yes, I know the project- and I think the idea is good. The problem of shortage of midwifery staff (as part of the health care workforce) however is a global problem- I guess with different solutions in low- resource and high- resource countries. Whereas this is certainly a solution for a "low" resource country, in some higher resource(in terms of what?- by the way?) countries they try to solve a shortage of midwifery staff with otherwise qualified health care persons.
Best wishes,
Ans

Betreff: Re: Virtual day of the midwife- shortage of midwifery staff
Dag Ans,
Groetjes,
Astrid

Subject: Virtual day of the midwife- shortage of midwifery staff
For your information
Dear Sarah, and others (maybe),
I do not know specific references on the shortage of midwives- as most papers are concerning almost all (caring) health care professions. In my regard the paper from the WHO (I believe 2008) is a basic document, including suggestions of how to approach the problem.
Then I know the Swiss paper recently being published (but in German).
I certainly would like to know, if anyone (maybe from the UK) have knowledge of documents solely concerning midwifery (?). Maybe something as part of the project 2020 (?).
I have to consider leading that session- just need a bit time to think about the time and my other obligations at that day- it certainly would be an important topic- for ICM's education as well.
Regards, Ans

Betreff: Re: Virtual International Day of the Midwife 5 May 2010- less midwifery staff
Hello Ans and Lorriane
I agree that the international shortage of midwives, how we recruit and retain, issues around midwifery support staff is a great topic to look at - anyone want to lead the session? :)
Ans: I have been looking for references that substantiate the shortage of midwives, do you have one or two that are very recent you would recommend?
Lorraine: I appreciate that people can't get to live events, which is the problem for face-to-face events. This is why I am always trying to encourage people to record events, even if it is a plain mp3 audio file...or upload their presentation slides to websites like Slideshare. Any live events that are held on the IDM in the virtual meeting room will be recorded so you can access them at your leisure.
cheers Sarah

Dear Lorraine,
The topic you raise about less midwifery staffing seems a to be a great concern of more people, and I have heard it coming from education people as well. Basically all official national and international documents notice(d) the upcoming shortage, but constrastingly it does not lead to an increase in the number of midwives, that should be trained (which actually is a recommendation). Instead other solutions are being proposed, and even staff in midwifery education is threatened to be reduced (because of the low number of students in some of our classes/ modules)
Seems a good topic to raise during a session this day; what happens in regard to midwifery staff, and how does does government etc. try to solve this ? (Funny enough, the midwives experiencing this cut down might have difficulties to attend though...)
Kind regards,
Ans
