i wish i could at least remember van der Meulen's interpretation of that
iconography --obviously it wasn't "drunkeness" --and how far back he was able
to trace it (pretty far, is my dim memory, perhaps back to pagan "models").
i [just] assume that it is some sort of variant on the "fountain of life" idea
--though why birds/griffins should get the honor of drinking from it is
unclear to me.
likewise, i'm essentially clueless as to the meaning of the saggitarian
centaur

and both of those capitals being in such a prominent place: right inside the
west entrance, the only figural sculpture on the western towers.
of course when they were done (probably 1130s or so, judging by their style)
they graced the entrance to Bishop Fulbert's early 11th c. cathedral, and who
knows what was to be seen inside of that (presumably magnificent) building...

rather obscure Festschrift and i can't find my reference to it (anyone?).
