There should be Debian specific versions in the apt repository. If not, they are also located at http://neuro.debian.net/pkgs/fsl.html
I would try the Debian specific version and see if you still have the error.

Hello,
I've checked the tar files on our local machines, and the fsl GUI
appears to be fine - can you let me know what happens if you try to
launch one of the other GUIs directly ( e.g Feat or Bet )?
Can you also confirm which fsl version you downloaded ( centos 5, 64 bit? )
