Thinking about the PhD in organisaitonal design terms and looking at factors
shaping the solution space:
In PhDs, there is a tendency to look backwards to traditions to sort out the
problems of the present. The problems of the present in PhD education are
due in large part to its history.
I'm reminded of 'if things are so good then how come they are so bad?'
What is needed is to do _better_ than the past. That's not an easy call as
there have been a large number of seriously intelligent people looking at
PhD education over the last 110 years.
The implications are that an improved solution to PhD is likely to be
different from what has gone before and is likely to be more difficult to
conceive than what has gone before.
