@BM_AG hasn't been on Twitter long, just since October, but from the start
we chose to follow people. As already stated engagement is important, and for
me it is also important for Birmingham Museums & Gallery to be a part of the
many wider communities to be found on twitter.
Communities I am aware of include our geographical (Birmingham/West Mids)
community, and important subsets: culture (people interested in art,
artists/makers, arts organisations, etc), heritage, local government, social
media, news, etc. @BM_AG is also a part of many of these national and
international communities - sharing, listening, speaking, repeating,
commenting, questioning. How could we do all that if we weren't following?
What value are we bringing to the online community if we tweet but don't
follow, don't participate, don't share?
I guess I don't just see Twitter just as a tool for communication and
broadcast, but as a participatory democratic culture.
We don't have an automatic follow set up - I like to check if people are real
etc, and personally I hate those direct messages that say 'Thanks for
following' because I know it is just an auto message. We're still learning, we
don't have enough time, and I'm sure we could be doing a lot better - but
those are the thoughts behind what why we have and what we do with our
twitter account.
