Dear Aaron,
What a pity you don't like my labels! Your intellectual clairvoyance is probably better than mine since I haven't read the other entries in the Colman volume and so can't really say whether they would be to your satisfaction (mine discusses Carroll along the way, which sounds a bit like what you're after). Perhaps it is worth reading to find out. At any rate, you will be pleased to know that I've read the Routledge Companion and think it is very good. I also quite like your entry on horror (though it is a pity that horror classics of the past--Murnau, Franju, etc.--are rarely mentioned in these summaries of debates between Carroll, Freeland, Shaw, etc). I'm not sure I agree that the Routledge volume is quite as dialogical as you suggest (I say why in a review for an upcoming issue of Projections, and would be interested in knowing what you think).
As for conversation, you'll notice that I say the Colman volume offers an "interesting counterpoint", meaning, as in music, a different voice that is hitting sometimes complementary, sometimes dissonant, notes. The point about conversation is that one's interlocutor can offer his or her own perspective in his or her own voice (or voices) in response to what is being discussed. It doesn't mean that every utterance must be polyvocal. That's what I imagine the Colman volume is doing; contributing a different voice--or rather voices--to the current conversation on the meaning of "film and philosophy", the identity and future of this thing called "philosophy of film". One doesn't have to agree, of course, or even listen to what the other is saying, though refusing to listen (or read!) would be bad manners. It would also stymie the possibility of interesting debate.
Regards,
Robert
