medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: C Figueredo <[log in to unmask]>
> Could you possibly recommend any bibliography on the Romancesque Notre
Dame of Paris? I am interested in its architecture as well as in the
every-day life of the cathedral and its school in the first half of the
twelfth century.
since your interest seems to be rather comprehensive, i can highly recommend
Robert-Henri Bautier, “Paris au temps de Abélard,” in: J. Jolivet, ed.,
Abélard en son temps: actes du colloque international organisé à
l’occasion du 9e centenaire de la naissance de Pierre Abélard, 14-19 mai
1979 (Paris, 1981), pp. 21-77.
a first-class bit of history writing, chock full of good references.
i have an OCRed copy of it, somewhere, and could probably send it to anyone
who might be interested in seeing it.
as for the problem of the cathedral fabric itself, the same constraints apply
for it as do for virtually every pre-"Gothic" building in the whole region
(and immediately beyond, Soissons to Orleans): within a very few decades the
new style took over in such a massive building boom that almost nothing
remains (above ground) of the architecture of the pre-1130s (the nave of St.
Germain-des-Pres being a notable exception).
this has led some Art Hysterians to assert the nearly laughable mare's nest
that there was nothing much there to begin with --some even going so far as to
put forward the idea that "Gothic" was the "Romanesque" of the Ile-de-France.
the corollary --that there was no figural sculpture in the region, either-- is
particularly unfortunate and has grossly distorted our ability to appreciate
the nature of the phenomenon which we term "Early Gothic Sculpture."
c
Bautier probably offers references to what little literature
