medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Julia Smith and list members.
The two medieval relic lists of the cathedral of the Holy Trinity (Christ
Church)in Dublin have been the subject of a much recent work by Raghnall Ó
Floinn of the National Museum of Ireland and Pádraig Ó Riain, professor
emeritus of Old Irish at University College, Cork.
Ó Floinn's thesis is that the cathedral's relic collection had at its core
relics brought from Cologne to Dublin c. 1028 by Bishop Dúnán (Donatus, d.
1074), first bishop of Dublin, as the foundation relics for the cathedral
recently established in the city by the hiberno-norse king of Dublin, Sitric
Silkenbeard.
Ó Riain argues that the mid-thirteenth century Christ Church martyrology
used by the Augustinian Canons who staffed the cathedral was based on a text
also brought from Germany/Cologne at this time.
The most recent presentatations of their cases are:
Raghnall Ó Floinn, 'The late medieval relics of Holy Trinity Church, Dublin'
in J. Bradley, A.J. Fletcher & A. Simms (eds) Dublin in the medieval world:
studies in honour of Howard B. Clarke (Dublin,2009), pp 369-89.
Pádraig Ó Riain, 'The calendar and martyrology of Christ Church cathedral,
Dublin, in R. Gillespie & R. Refaussé (eds)The medieval manuscripts of
Christ Church cathedral Dublin, (Dublin, 2006)pp 33-59.
The relics included a number of relics of English saints as well and one of
St Benedict which is referred to in one of the lists as 'of our father
Benedict', which I believe is an oblique reference to the presence of
Benedictine monks at Christ Church's towards the end of the eleventh
century. Other evidence also corroborates this.
Hope this helps
