Third Circular LASI IV
Dear colleagues,
From September 22th-26rd (Note these dates are final and different than the
first AND second circular), 2010, LASI IV (Physical Geology of Subvolcanic
Systems: Laccoliths, Sills, and Dikes) will be held in Moab, Utah, U.S.A.
The conference will include two days of talks and posters, along with two
days of field trips to the classic laccoliths and sills of the nearby Henry
Mountains.
This is the fourth LASI conference, all of which have been devoted to the
emplacement processes, petrogenesis, magma system dynamics, fabric analysis,
and geologic setting of shallow level magma emplacement. The first three
LASI conferences have been in Europe with the most recent on Elba Island,
Italy, in the fall of 2008:

The Henry Mountains are the type locality for the term Œlaccolith¹ and have
superb three-dimensional exposures of many forms of intrusions. Field trips
will document the incremental growth of a large intrusion from sill, to
sheeted laccolith, to bysmalith (pluton). We will also examine evidence for
assembly of intrusions through emplacement of multiple magma pulses
(sheets).
Moab is the center of ³red rock² country, with many beautiful National Parks
located nearby. Two parks, Arches and Canyonlands, are located in Moab.
Capital Reef, Zion, and Bryce National Parks and the Grand Canyon are all
within one day¹s drive.
Itinerary.
** Wednesday, 22 September
Arrive in Salt Lake City. Motorcoach bus to Red Cliffs Lodge, Moab, Utah.
Icebreaker, dinner, and accommodations at lodge.
** Thursday, 23 September: Presentations and accommodations at Red Cliffs
Lodge.
** Friday, 24 September: Presentations. Leave after dinner for Hanksville,
Utah. Stay in local motels.
** Saturday, 25 September Field trip
AM - In the morning we will visit exposures of the Maiden Creek sill
composed of two stacked sheets with a complex map view geometry and discuss
emplacement history, magma flow patterns, etc..
PM - In the afternoon we will examine the Trachyte Mesa laccolith and
consider how intrusion construction processes (multiple sheet injection)
seen in the sill relate to those preserved in the Trachyte Mesa.
** Sunday, 26 September Field trip
AM - In the morning we will examine a complete cross section through a
mature elongate laccolith (Sawtooth Ridge) and use excellent views of a
nearby bysmalith (Black Mesa) to discuss growth of these intrusions, and how
they may have evolved from sills and laccoliths.
PM - In the afternoon we will visit one of two superb outcrops of the outer
margin of the main Mt Hillers intrusive center (Copper Creek or Gold Creek
exposures). Specific features to examine will likely include subvertical
sedimentary beds, concordant sills, discordant dikes, and the main intrusive
body. These exposures will serve as catalysts for discussion of the possible
relationships between the range of intrusion geometries examined, and for
the growth of complex shallowly emplaced igneous bodies in general. Return
to Salt Lake City with stop in Richfield Utah for people going on the
post-meeting trip.
The website for the conference is:

The cost for the conference is $680 and includes all meals, lodging, and
Motorcoach transportation from Salt Lake City to Moab, field trips, and
return motorcoach to Salt Lake City. Guests are welcome but each person will
have to pay the full cost ($680) and will receive the same services. Guest
activities include rafting on the Colorado River, horseback riding, hiking,
and visiting local National Parks (these are additional costs).
Graduate Student fee is $600.
Optional, 1 day post-meeting field trip to the Iron Axis Laccolith complex
of south-central Utah will be additional. This trip will be lead by Mike
Petronis and David Hacker. The details of this trip will be forthcoming.
Registration opens February 1, 2010 and is limited to 50.
