I remember when Victory V Lozenges lost their characteristic taste because chloroform had been banned from cough syrups etc. - according to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chloroform) this happened in the USA in 1976, so I guess it would have been around then that it happened in the UK. The Wikipedia item gives a reference to a National Toxicology Program report (http://ntp.niehs.nih.gov/ntp/roc/eleventh/profiles/s038chlo.pdf) which states that "Chloroform is reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen based on sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity in experimental animals" so I think you might want to find something else.
Regards
Elliott

Subject: Bacteriostat use in 24 hr urine collections
We have for years been adding chloroform to 24 hr urine collection bottles
as a bacteriostat. This practice has been questioned what to other labs
do if anything?
Thank you
Paul
