medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I can't speak specifically to Medieval Studies or even History (I'm in an
English department) but an MA from the U of Montana proved to be a fine
launch towards a PhD at the Ivy level, if not at an actually ivy-bedecked
institution. It helped that I was able to work closely with a good
medievalist there, but mostly, I think, it was the opportunity (and
requirement) to spend the sustained energy on thesis-writing that produced
work worthy of a good application.
I'm not selling my school so much as endorsing the Master's route for
someone who had a less than exemplary record beforehand, as well as
suggesting that the program's reputation doesn't matter so much, as long as
there is a good advisor to be had.
