Has anyone read Sarah Foot's book on Anglo-Saxon monasticism ??
Any recommendations ?

Perhaps you might couple it with a book on the early medieval church
that offers a more sympathetic interpretation. Even something like
Lawrence's book on monasticism might be a useful corrective.
