References, please? If memory serves, I could dig up an analogous example of an Icelander
carrying a candle - in Rome! The details may not be accurate, but the fact that this was
done in Dutch cities (when is "late medieval"?) might have been known to the author.

There is ample evidence of lawbreakers in late medieval Dutch cities that were ordered to carry a candle of a certain weight (the worse the crime the heavier and therefore more expensive the candle) to wear in the next procession dressed in their shirt. It was a fine (the laying out of money to buy the candle) and a penance in one go. Mind you, this was secular justice.
