Queen Mary University of London Centre for Criminal Justice and Centre for
Law and Medical Ethics present a half-day conference:
Purdy and the DPP’s guidelines
In 2009 the House of Lords decided in R (on the application of Purdy) v
Director of Public Prosecutions [2009] UKHL 45 that the Director should
issue guidance on the question whether and when prosecutions should be
brought for aiding and abetting the suicide of someone who was helped to
travel to a jurisdiction where assisted suicide is lawful, and then helped to
commit suicide. The Director subsequently published interim policy guidance
on the prosecution of the offence of assisted suicide and launched a public
consultation exercise which will end in December. The litigation and the
guidelines raise a range of questions which are of interest to students of
criminal law, jurisprudence, medical law and disability studies.
Speakers include:
Peter Alldridge, ‘Purdy, Criminal Law and Disability Rights’
David Schiff and Richard Nobles, ‘Disobedience to Law’
Richard Ashcroft, ‘Purdy and the Working Clinician’
