Taking up on Richard's comments, I do not think that using varnish or
other products to write on them is a good idea. I have studied
collections that were over 30 years old and the varnish was often
flaking off from the bones, leaving the bone unlabeled. In SW France,
a common method now is to use rotring pens with china ink. We write
directly on bones using these pens. And it seems to hold well.
