Do you use a particular tool within Moodle to do this, and if so, which one?
Thanks

Our A-level Product Design course requires an ongoing coursework submission which passes continually between student and teacher during most of the year, with the student revising his work according to teacher advice and comments. We manage this via Moodle, keeping all iterations so the development of the student's work as well as the final outcome is available... thus combining formative and ultimately summative assessment. The final submission is burned to CD for transmission to the exam board.

Martine (et al)
As with Ray I think one of the great advantages of online assessment is that it can do more than just summative assessment. In addition I question shouldn't we also be thinking of diagnostic assessment (arguably another formative assessment?) - particularly as a part of initial assessment of students skills perhaps as part of the Individual Learning Plan (ILP) process (ie getting to know the students at the beginning of their engagement). I would argue that where they are separate getting all of these 'systems' interoperating with one another is a challenge but well worthwhile as part of a coherent and joined-up assessment strategy.

Martine,
As much as I note your emphasis on summative assessment, I feel that a formative approach towards that final grading is essential.
As a teacher for many years, I've found that getting to know each and every student before the final crunch of the end-of-course-marking is essential. Certainly, it helps me to 'mug up' any nuances of the material before the final pressure of marking - and thus some ease in having an overview of the material presented before the rush.
But, more importantly, to my mind, is the understanding of the *processes* by which the student has come to their final presentation and if their learning has progressed through an assimilation of feedback from peers or tutors. If nothing else, seeing an artefact grow is a useful guard against plagiarism.
And thus my absolute conviction of the place of e-Portfolios in Teaching and Learning.

Subject: [VLES] Innovative ways of online assessing
Dear Colleagues
Are there innovative ways of assessing students work online? I am researching into methods of online assessments mainly for summative purposes. The Open University ask students to upload their MS Word created assessments and these are marked online using comments, then returned to students. This was the same method used at the University of Portsmouth for the MSc in e-Learning Technologies which was an online course. However, I am interested in any other online methods that would be accepted by examining boards and universities.
