On our catalogue available items have the status of 'AVAILABLE'.
One of our staff has pointed out that they think this is confusing in the Holds
table you see when you are logged into your library account.
If I place a hold on an item, its status stays as 'AVAILABLE' until it is checked
onto the holdshelf, when the status changes to 'Ready. Must pickup by ...'.
As the STATUS is next to the PICKUP LOCATION, it does look a bit like the
item is available for pickup, when it's not, e.g.:
TITLE: [Title]
STATUS: AVAILABLE
PICKUP LOCATION: Library Enquiry Desk
When the item is available for pickup it displays as:
TITLE: [Title]
STATUS: Ready. Must pickup by [date]
PICKUP LOCATION: Library Enquiry Desk
My questions:
If you use the item status of AVAILABLE, and allow holds on available items,
have you noticed this cause any confusion to your users?
And if it has caused confusion, have you found a way to make the message
clear (without changing the 'AVAILABLE' label)?
