Audience
ANZMapS was formed in March this year through the amalgamation of the respective Australian and New Zealand Map societies, the Australian organisation previously being known as the Australian Map Circle. ANZMapS draws together people working with, or having a particular interest in, maps and cartography. Membership includes curators, librarians, geographers, historical researchers, cartographers, surveyors, scientists and map collectors.
Conference theme
The 2010 conference theme is Mapping climate: an environment for change. Analyses and explanations of climate and climate-change routinely employ mapping. Both individuals and organisations use and display data and analyses as to the climate's effect on the environment, resources and species (both human and other) by using geographical and spatial science tools. The conference theme also acknowledges South Australia's groundbreaking work in this field, going back to Surveyor-General George Goyder.
Within the general theme, the aim is to be able to shape the conference around climate related cartographic analysis, for example those directed to:
* mapping vegetation, land usage, or other ways of establishing climate variability and adaption, including Goyder's seminal work;
* rainfall mapping, the mapping of sea level changes through time, the charting of the Murray-Darling (both in its own right and if the information available provides evidence of climate variability or change in flows), and mapping of Australia's artesian water resources;
* the development of weather forecasting and weather mapping including the reconstruction and depiction of major weather events, current and emerging techniques and methods for depicting and disseminating information around weather;
* a similar construct directed to forecasting, or explaining, major bushfires.
We are very keen to encourage wide participation and attendance, including experts, students and the general public.
Speakers who have already agreed to participate include: Hon Dr John Bannon AO, historian and former South Australian Premier, on the South Australian experience, development versus the challenge of climate; Dr Peter Hayman: What can we learn from Goyder's Line of reliable rainfall in a changing climate; Matt Miles, Senior GIS Analyst, Department of Environment and Heritage: GIS for Climate Change: Maps and More; Dr Martin Woods, Curator of Maps, National Library of Australia: Cartographic collections as a resource for climate analysis; Janis Sheldrick, Goyder's Biographer: 1855-1865; Goyder's long ride to mapping reliable rainfall; Greg Wood, Canberra map-historian: Uncertain sources; rainfall, rivers and national capital site selection.
Publication and peer review
ANZMapS publishes a peer- reviewed cartographic journal, The Globe, on a semi-annual basis and would be open to including conference papers in that publication, subsequent to peer review. The Society does not presume that conference papers will be peer-reviewed prior to presentation.
Provisional program
This is still in outline and subject to change without notice.
PM Tuesday April 6
"Bring in a map day". Not strictly part of the conference but Adelaide residents will be encouraged to bring in maps they own to get an expert opinion on their significance and approximate value.
Wednesday 7 April
Conference Registration
Keynote Address from Hon J C Bannon.
Conference Sessions (all day).
Conference Dinner.
Thursday 8 April
Conference Sessions (all day).
PM. Annual General Meeting ANZMaps
Friday 9 April
AM Tour of map collections held by leading South Australian institutions which we expect to include the State Library of South Australia, The Royal Geographical Society (SA Branch), South Australia State Records Office, University of Adelaide, Barr Smith Library.
PM Meetings of expert professional groups, the one scheduled at this stage being a meeting of map librarians and curators.
Registration and accommodation
A registration brochure and provisional program will be distributed late October. Conference costs, and fee structure, are still being developed, but should be at a similar level to past AMC conferences held in Australia.
It will be up to the individual participant to arrange their accommodation, but we will provide advice on the best websites, and suggest number of accommodation options.
