Dear All,
I am a Masters Student working on the avian remains from the site of Cladh
Hallan on South Uist in the Outer Hebrides.
The assemblage contained a claw of a large raptor. I was wondering if anyone
was able to provide photograph or illustration with scale of such a bone for
the White-Tailed Eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) or any other large raptor,
since I have not been able to access one for comparison.
I am also hoping that someone may have a photograph of a great auk
(Pinguinus impennis) femur. I have two femurs which do appear to be great
auk based upon the illustrations in Cohen, A. and Serjeantson, D. 1996. A
Manual for the identification of bird bones from archaeological sites.
However, having never seen a great auk bone in real live I am reluctant to
decisively identify them as such! The assemblage does contain a number of
other Great Auk elements.
Thank you, any help would be much appreciated
Julia
