medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (1. August) is the feast day of:
I know it is not a saint's day, but August 1 is also Lammastide (hlafmaesse
= loaf mass) the beginning of the harvest when the first wheat from the
first reaped sheaf was ground into flour and baked into the first new loaf
and consecrated for the Mass.
Looking at the weather here in the south of England I am wondering what on
earth the harvest will be like this year ..... Not something most of my
(urban) neighbours seem to notice. In the MA every community was "one
harvest away from famine." (now who said that ?)
In Scotland it is a Quarter Day. (In England IIRC the Quarter Day is
Midsummer's Day - 25th June)
