Dear All,
Happened today to have to look at 'Tin Mines & Miners of Lanner - The
Heart of Cornish Tin', by S.P.Schwartz & R.Parker, and on pp.16, Fig.1.3. shows
a Manorial marker stone on the summit of Carn Marth. The PT carved into
this stone signifies the Pannance in the Manor of Tolgus - part of the Buller
Estate.
The horizontal 'tweaks' to the top of carved letters were a common
'finishing' feature for many years as we know already, so, this does tend to
demonstrate that this is a distinct capital V. What is the name of the Parish
and Manor in the area where these stones reside? What was the name of the
Estate and Estate owners in times gone by? Are there any marker stones within a
few miles radius? Is there any mine beginning with V within a few miles of
the stones? All obvious questions of course, and have most likely been
followed before, but it is an interesting matter.
Again, it would be interesting to know if there is anything on the reverse
of the stones.
Regards, Bernard
