Dear Roger,
I would suggest these stones were boundary markers/estate survey points,
and were intended to be 'planted' in the upright position to show the 'mark',
but, seemingly were not installed, or were removed and placed where they
are now. It would be interesting to know if there is a 'mark' on the reverse
of the stones.
