two miles with one's head in one's hands is no great hagiographic achievement,
but seven...one could loose one's Amateur Standing with seven.

i've not heard that (which means nothing), but i believe that the only church
up there in Thomas' time was the convent founded by Louis VI & his Queen,
Adelaide of Maurienne in the 1130s

but one which doesn't seem like an appropriate hangout for a guy on the lam
from an angry king.
a good bit of his time in France was spent at Pontigny, i believe, though i've
forgotten exactly why that was the case.
