medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
It is presumably Dionysius of Paris, but a quick check of the literature on him available to
my (Icelandic) readers describes a typical martyrdom at the hands of pagans
(aside from the fact that he walks two miles carrying his head) rather than a fighter
for ecclesiastical liberty.
Can anyone shed light on the suggestion below by Andre Yves Bourges, for which thanks?
"Didn't Thomas stay at Montmartre, which is the traditional location of st Denys' martyrdom?"
I will be able to look up the books others have already referred me to with respect to
Becket soon (am in fact heading to Canterbury in a week, hopefully the Archive will
have relevant material.) Thanks to all for their comments (though no one has apparently
heard of the attribution of a Marian psaltar to Thomas?)

Dear Marjorie,
of course, my text doesn´t specify which . . . but tangling with secular
authority would appear to be a good line.

Meg, One could pose the irritating question: which Saint Dionysius? (See: http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/05009b.htm
I suspect though Thomas invoked the one you have in mind and for the reasons you suggest. As I recall, Denis (of Gaul) was martyred for tangling with secular authority.
I hope you get something more definitive!

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Greetings all, ´
I´ve been looking at vernacular accounts of Thomas Becket's martyrdom,
and note that he commends himself to the Virgin Mary, the patrons of the
church, and St. Dionysius. Does anyone have any ideas (other than the
parallelism between a head wound and beheading) why Dionysius?
Was his cult particularly prominent in England and/or the areas in France
where Thomas had been in exile?
Thanks in advance,
Meg
