I appreciate your point. My professor, Olov Forsgren, has for years been
suggesting that information systems should include documentation on
themselves and tools for discussing their merits.
I guess it is for instance possible to use Google to find information on
what went into Google?
At least some artifacts that is the output of research ought to be able to
maintain a debate within, rather than detaching and spreading the discussion
over a number journals that are fragmented according to academic
disciplines?

But the devil is in the audit trail. For example we may 'know' that
Google came from research at Stanford but do we know whose research,
when and how it flowed into Google? Without the evidence and the
narrative that joins it up properly on record we are plaiting fog. A
single well-organised conference paper might be enough to set the record
straight but without it we actually know nothing.
It reminds me of my former life as an itinerant musician in the 1970s.
We found ourselves in a dispute with the students union at Leeds
Polytechnic (Now Leeds Metropolitan University) about whether they had
done enough to attract an audience for our gig as we were paid a
percentage. One of their arguments was that they (Leeds Polytechnic)
were an internationally famed venue so it must be our fault that nobody
turned up. Trouble is that the international fame claim was based
entirely on the iconic "Live at Leeds" album recorded by The Who up the
road at University of Leeds. Plenty of aspirant researchers today are
making similar vague claims for esteem by association.
