medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
a member of my little Chartres discussion list has put forward a query which
someone here can surely answer off the top of their larnéd head.
thanks in advance for any thoughts.
c
> I have just found a reference to Pope Innocent III being so happy with the
renown that Moissac had achieved that he allowed the monks to wear "les habits
pontificaux." Does anyone know anything about this privilege? How was it
awarded? What did these 'habits pontificaux' look like? When did they wear
them? Was it just an honor or did they acquire special powers by wearing
them?
> Not incidentally, this source also says that the monks at Cluny pointed out
that this privilege would give Moissac independence from Cluny, so the Pope
said the monks could not take advantage of this privilege unless they swore
obedience to the monks of Cluny.
