We seek to appoint the following positions:

1 PhD Studentship - Fault Dynamics Research Group
Tectono-Stratigraphic Evolution of the SE Mediterranean margin (in conjunction with BP 
Egypt and BP Libya).  Supervisor: Professor Ken McClay.

We are seeking an Arabic speaking North African PhD student to work on this industry 
funded PhD project on the tectonic evolution and stratigraphic evolution of the SE 
Mediterranean (Libyan and Egyptian margins).  Funded by BP this project will involve 
close collaboration with both BP Egypt and BP Libya.  

The aims of this research project will be to evaluate the tectono-stratigraphic evolution of 
the SE Mediterranean margin using 2D and 3D seismic data as well as remote sensing 
and potential field data.  New field data combined with recently acquired 2D and 3D 
offshore seismic data will be used to map the structure of the margin and to analyze the 
Tethean to Present Day tectonic evolution - from Tethean extension to Late Cretaceous - 
Cenozoic inversion.  Structural and stratigraphic analyses will be combined with potential 
field analyses to develop integrated tectono-stratigraphic models in the context of plate 
tectonic reconstructions for this part of the Mediterranean.  A knowledge of modern 
structural geology concepts applied to the development of sedimentary basins and their 
tectono-stratigraphy is essential for the successful completion of this research program.   

The successful candidate will be North African and fluent in both Arabic and English.  We 
are seeking a high calibre, highly motivated researcher who will work with 2D and 3D 
seismic data, remote sensing data and potential field data.  The successful candidate will 
be expected to have an excellent academic record with an internationally recognised MSc 
in Earth Sciences with specialization in structural geology, tectonics or geophysics.  
Seismic interpretation and workstation experience would be advantageous.

Mechanics of Salt-related Fold Structures
in Passive Margin Deepwater Fold Belts

Deepwater exploration around the Atlantic Margins has targeted complex deformed and 
fractured sediments in the deepwater fold belts detached on salt. To support exploration 
in these geologically and technically challenging deepwater environments, a better 
understanding of salt-related folding and faulting is necessary. 

The MSc projects are part of our research collaboration with industry that focuses on 
complex structured and fractured reservoirs. The long-term goal is the development of 
tools for the mechanical analysis and simulation of salt-related structures and the 
corresponding fracture systems in complex deformed sedimentary rocks. 

The MSc by research projects will investigate the mechanics of salt-cored folds, fault-
bend faults, and salt-detached folds in passive margin deepwater salt basins with 
integrated geophysical interpretation and innovative physical/numerical simulation 
methods. The students will receive training in tectonic basin analysis, seismic 
interpretation, kinematic, analogue & numerical modelling, geomechanics.

Requirements:
Candidates should have a strong background in structural geology and basin modelling. 
Experience in analogue modelling and laboratory work is an asset. Candidates must 
possess, or be expected to achieve, a 2.1 class UK honours degree or equivalent in Earth 
Sciences or a relevant discipline. Students whose first language is not English require an 
IELTS score of at least 6.5 (with a score of 7.0 in the written English component of the 
test) or a TOEFL score of at least 570.
