We do not allow samples to be sent on ice, blood cultures, urines, CSF or pleural fluids as this invalidates the warranty for our pneumatic system and if a "precious" sample gets stuck in the system then that could have unfortunate patient consequences. Blood gases are also not acceptable if sent via our pneumatic system - we took a conservative approach on this as the literature gives varying advice on whether gases are affected (they will be if there is an air bubble in the sample).Most areas have blood gas analysers anyway and those few that are portered are done so very quickly and always dealt with as urgent.
