medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
A student of mine claims to have seen the use of the word 'imperpetuum'
in the context of a late C13 grant of church property meaning 'for the
life of the grantor'. He referenced it as Baxter and Johnson but it
isn't there, nor in Latham. Has anyone come across this elsewhere? The
dating is pretty crucial to his argument.
Also (with apologies for cross-posting to wells-and-spas): has anyone
come across the use of the word 'oculus' to mean a spring? The Welsh
word for eye, llygad, can also mean a spring or source but I've not come
across the Latin used in that way.
