David & All: We are not in the service design business and I was not seeking
to address your service design related question. I was simply tabling
another question for my service design oriented colleagues to consider: ie:
What happens when the challenges that you encounter in organizational
contexts have nothing to do with service?
I do not take it personally that my colleagues engaged in service design
might not be ready to address this question. There might be numerous reasons
for this so I do not find any sliding way attempts in that absence.
While I realize the default mode of this list is debate, mirroring the
łargument˛ values, protocols, and precisions of academic PhD culture I often
wonder if this is the best mode to work constructively on some of the issues
that surface here such as this one about measurement.
Certainly the challenge of defining measures is one being faced not only by
service design colleagues but by many others as well. Some aspects of the
design community of communities might be further along in that knowledge
development curve than others. No big mystery there. Who might have some
knowledge of such issues and how could those interested in this subject
identify and engage those entities? It is no secret that only a small
fraction of the design community engages here in this debate forum.
Over the years I have noticed that many important issues are raised in this
forum and few ever seem to move beyond debate rhetoric and debate dynamics.
Issues spin for a few dramatic cycles and are then forgotten when the next
round of dramas appear. Surely some of these issues deserve more and
different forms of our attention.
Perhaps part of the challenge is that some on the list are confusing or
equating debate mode with co-creation mode. In our corner of the universe
the two modes are quite different. In co-creation practice a mastery of one
does not equate to a mastery of the other. Forgive my frankness but equating
one with the other seems to be a fundamental misperception in the PhD Design
list community.
For those seeking to work in specific issues such as measurement in a mode
other than debate perhaps they could suggest /create an alternate outside
place for those interested to engage that is not connected to the legacy
dynamics of this list. If this is the PhD Design Debating Community perhaps
someone could create a parallel PhD Design Co-Creating Community with
multiple issue groups within. We would be happy to help anyone so inclined
to do so.
At 50+ I am myself as tired of the tit-for-tat debate merry-go-round as I am
of the repeating starting points phenomenon. Both seem so trivial in light
of the challenges facing the world.and by the way many of those challenges
have nothing to do with products and services.
Have a good evening.
