If you know of suitable candidates for the post described below, I'd be
grateful if you would forward it to them. The post involves some teaching,
some advice-giving to other researchers, and a half time role in collecting and
analysing video-recorded data of consultations in health care settings. It
would suit someone with experience of studying interaction / talk.

Queen Mary University of London
(Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry)
Centre for Health Sciences
Researcher (Human Sciences)
2 Years Fixed Term
Research Grade 5
£33,492 to £39,430 per annum inc London Allowance
Ref: 09177/CE
This is a two year post in the Centre for Health Sciences, in which half the
post-holder’s time will be spent working on a research study investigating
communication in health care, and the other half will be spent in teaching and
the provision of research advice.
The research element of this post will involve working with medical sociologists
Moira Kelly and Clive Seale on studies of communication in health care
settings, initially concerning diabetes care in the community, thereafter
expanding into other settings (probably smoking cessation consultations).
This work will involve collecting video and audio recordings of talk between
health care providers and patients, then becoming involved in their detailed
transcription and analysis. Some interviews with participants will be involved,
and preparing the material for a data archive will also form part of this work.
Other elements will involve teaching undergraduate medical students and
postgraduate public health and primary care students, and providing advice to
researchers in the NHS on the research design of projects for which they are
applying for funding.
The Centre for Health Sciences is based on the Whitechapel site of Queen
Mary’s School of Medicine and Dentistry, University of London, at the heart of
London’s East end. Researchers are a multidisciplinary team from a wide range
of backgrounds including general practice, medical ethics, nursing, statistics,
public health, sociology, and psychology.
Candidates will possess a higher degree in social research related to health,
and have experience of health related research, particularly analysing and
interpreting qualitative data, ideally derived from direct observation of
interaction and with some knowledge or experience in conversation analysis or
another form of interaction analysis. You will have good computer skills and
be able to negotiate access to health care settings and work with health care
providers and patients. You will need some experience of teaching in higher
education, preferably to medical or other health care students and/or in social
research methods, and are likely to have been involved in successful research
funding applications. Flexibility in work undertaken and the ability to work
unsupervised or as part of a team are essential.
This is a 24 month fixed term contract post in the first instance, with the
possibility of being extended for a further two years. The salary is within
Research Grade 5 – £33,492 to £39,430 pa, dependent on experience. The
appointment is full-time and the post is based in Whitechapel. Enquiries about
the post (but NOT applications) are welcomed by Professor Clive Seale on 020
7882 2511 or [log in to unmask] or by Dr Moira Kelly on 020 7882 7085 or
