Clive Seale Queen Mary University of London (Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry) Centre for Health Sciences Researcher (Human Sciences) 2 Years Fixed Term Research Grade 5 £33,492 to £39,430 per annum inc London Allowance Ref: 09177/CE This is a two year post in the Centre for Health Sciences, in which half the post-holder’s time will be spent working on a research study investigating communication in health care, and the other half will be spent in teaching and the provision of research advice. The research element of this post will involve working with medical sociologists Moira Kelly and Clive Seale on studies of communication in health care settings, initially concerning diabetes care in the community, thereafter expanding into other settings (probably smoking cessation consultations). This work will involve collecting video and audio recordings of talk between health care providers and patients, then becoming involved in their detailed transcription and analysis. Some interviews with participants will be involved, and preparing the material for a data archive will also form part of this work. Other elements will involve teaching undergraduate medical students and postgraduate public health and primary care students, and providing advice to researchers in the NHS on the research design of projects for which they are applying for funding. The Centre for Health Sciences is based on the Whitechapel site of Queen Mary’s School of Medicine and Dentistry, University of London, at the heart of London’s East end. Researchers are a multidisciplinary team from a wide range of backgrounds including general practice, medical ethics, nursing, statistics, public health, sociology, and psychology. Candidates will possess a higher degree in social research related to health, and have experience of health related research, particularly analysing and interpreting qualitative data, ideally derived from direct observation of interaction and with some knowledge or experience in conversation analysis or another form of interaction analysis. You will have good computer skills and be able to negotiate access to health care settings and work with health care providers and patients. You will need some experience of teaching in higher education, preferably to medical or other health care students and/or in social research methods, and are likely to have been involved in successful research funding applications. Flexibility in work undertaken and the ability to work unsupervised or as part of a team are essential. This is a 24 month fixed term contract post in the first instance, with the possibility of being extended for a further two years. The salary is within Research Grade 5 – £33,492 to £39,430 pa, dependent on experience. The appointment is full-time and the post is based in Whitechapel.
