medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Mea maxissima culpa!
In my defence I did not actually see the article myself as I was teaching a
course when it appeared but I was there for the seminar, which was
excellent, and for the singing of the litany, which was very moving as many
of the saints included are from the vicinity of Glenstal. The circumstances
of its survival, recognition, identification and eventual use in the liturgy
were remarkable and it was a wonderful project to have been involved in, all
of which came together in less than a week.
I know that Padáig Ó Riain and Dagmar Ó Riain Raedel have plans to edit and
publish the litany and will let you know what comes of it. Anyone with an
interest in the medieval Irish Benedictine Congregation of St James might
like to have a look at Dagmar Ó Riain Raedel's article 'Irish Benedictine
Monasteries on the Continent' in M.Browne and C Ó Clabaigh (eds) The Irish
Benedictines: a history (Dublin, 2005). This is the most recent treatment of
the subject in English and has a comprehensive bibliography.
