At Soton the student can decide whether s/he wants the supervisor present and they almost always want them to be present. Suprevisors do not get involved in the viva but are there to clarify anything if need be.

However, Jo, when Jim Simpson and I examined a thesis at UEA around 2000, you were present - not, I think, as supervisor, but as a kind of faculty friend. I have had the supervisor present at vivas in Leeds and Liverpool.
