Hi Will,
Sounds like the kind of mistake one would be forgiven for making in relation to "Made in USA".
You could email Sarris Himself and ask him -- he's seemingly quite contactable.

Subject: Query about Godard and Sarris
Just for the sake of memory, since this is seemingly unGoogle-able...
Andrew Sarris made some error about a Godard film once, in which he read a gun as being fired by a black character, when in fact the black character was an onlooker and the gun was fired by one of the white protagonists in the film.
I cannot remember the film (if I have seen it - Weekend?). But more importantly, I am wondering where Sarris wrote this and, more importantly, where it has been pointed out that he got this wrong...
Anyone have any ideas?
With best wishes
William
