I agree with much of what has been said by others on this topic.
Additionally though, from the angle of psychology and to some extent
education studies, there's a rich literature in, variously, the
personality correlates of creativity, cognitive styles and related
learning styles, and other measures of individual differences over the
past 3 or 4 decades. Sternberg is a common source of major works, and
nearer to design figures such as Lawson and Powell from architecture.
Some studies have shown differences in approach between say some kinds
of engineer, and kinds of designers or architects with instruments
such as MBTI, Kolb, Honey and Mumford, and others.
I'd be interested to see what you find in surveying the various fields
that may contribute something to individual or group differences among
designers. I'll send some links offlist but would ask that you
eventually provide a summary of your findings back to the list at some
future point?
