medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
25 February's ODNB 'Life of the Day' was Simon Walker's biography of Simon
Sudbury, (c.1316-1381), administrator and archbishop of Canterbury. An
interesting ecclesiastical career with involvement in disputes between the
bishop of Norwich and powerful abbot of Bury St Edmunds, periods at the
papal court in Avignon, royal diplomat, a popular bishop of London, a
conscientious archbishop (although, perhaps, lukewarm in his opposition of
Wyclif) but, unfortunately for him, lord chancellor at the time of the poll
taxes and a victim of the Peasants' Revolt. A patron of Canterbury
cathedral, Cambridge University and founder of a collegiate church.
If anyone would like a copy of the biography, please contact me, off list,
before the end of the week.
