Call for papers
The Journal of Design Strategies welcomes submissions for the Fall 2009
issue, addressing the theme of “Change Design.”
Change Design
Rationale
There is not much doubt that we are living in fast-changing times. The
question is, will we be able to take the current crisis as an
opportunity to foster change in the direction of an advanced sustainable
society? And how can design participate in determining the direction of
change?
This issue of the Journal seeks to frame the change design theme
according to the following dimensions of change:
Local change: changes affecting our ways of living towards more
sustainable lifestyles on a local scale
Global change: how the various processes of globalization can contribute
to the amplification of positive change
Contributions are especially welcomed from academics and practitioners
in the design-related disciplines as well as from researchers in the
social sciences, management, economics, policy, and other
multi-disciplinary efforts to approach the challenge of pervasive and
accelerating change.
Background
This call is intended to advance two important recent initiatives of the
international design community:
The Design Research Agenda For Sustainability
Result from the Changing the Change Conference (held in Turin on July
2008 in the framework of Turin 2008 World Design Capital, an ICSID
initiative of the IDA) that presents statements, emerging issues and
promising design research fields and directions for sustainability.

The Kyoto Design Declaration
Signed in Kyoto on March 2008 at the Kyoto Design Conference by the
Executive Board of Cumulus (the International Association of
Universities and Colleges of Art, Design and Media) as a commitment of
the design community to share global responsibility for building
sustainable, human-centred and creative societies.
