Call for Papers for a Special Issue in Space & Culture
{im}materiality : designing for more sense/s
Guest editors : Patrick Devlieger, Megan Strickfaden & Ann Heylighen
{im}materiality is a concept that begins to describe the relationship people have with the built environment. That is, materials are the tangible/physical aspects of the built world, whereas the immaterial refers to the less tangible sensations, meanings and values that people attach to their experiences with that world. This theme recognises the inseparable marriage between the material and the immaterial in the context of architectural/spatial cultural experiences and design.
The goal of this special issue is to move beyond the philosophical questions of {im}materiality into questions about the physical fabric of our daily environment, and relate these to non-normative viewpoints, such as those by persons with a sensory disability. We raise questions about the nature of {im}materiality, the design process, the senses, access and navigation, innovative use of materials, development of new materials, and sign systems for navigation in urban spaces. In doing this we examine the nature of knowledge production in experiencing and designing and ask questions about multisensory qualities in our built environments.
This special issue is set up in the context of Architectural design In Dialogue with dis-Ability (AIDA), an interdisciplinary research project which seeks to explore the potential added value of disability for improving multisensory qualities in the built environment. AIDA is supported by a Starting Grant of the European Research Council (ERC) at the K.U.Leuven.
We would like to invite you to submit your abstract, which deals with :
-transitions between the material and the immaterial as informed by disability ;
-making, contesting, designing space from non-normative viewpoints;
-multisensory use of materials;
-multisensory qualities of spaces ;
-semiotics of space such as, sign systems and/or (alternative) routings.
We look forward to hearing of your interest to contribute by sending an abstract (400 words) by May 15 2009 through email to the editorial team at :

Authors will be notified regarding the success of their abstract by July 1 2009. Following this, selected manuscripts will need to be submitted before September 1 2009 and must be a maximum of 6,500 words (including bibliography).
